Full Description

Methodist church, built 1866-7, by Foster and Wood, with alterations in 1955, from a bequest by John B. Cole. The building, in Romanesque style, is of Flemish bond brickwork and Portland ashlar to the front, brickwork and squared and dressed Portland stone to the sides and rear, with slate roofs and consists of a high nave with galleries on three sides, lower aisles, a shallow chancel, a two storey external narthex with stairs to an entrance lobby, and an undercroft. The front of the building is intricately detailed with a high gable under an enriched cornice and cresting. The gable contains an 8-light wheel window above a deep stone apron, flanked by small arched openings. Below is a four bay arcade on paired Romanesque columns to stilted arches, on pedestals with a balustrade between. These are above a doorway. The building plinth is of rock-faced masonry. <1>
