Description

OASIS: Project Methodology: Three trial pits were excavated during the archaeological monitoring and recording for the initial exploratory works, trial pit 1 was located against the inside of the north wall of the church, trial pit 2 was located approximately in the centre of the internal space of the church, and trial pit 3 was excavated against the inside of the south wall. The watching archaeologist monitored all mechanical excavations within the specified area. Where necessary, the surfaces of uncovered archaeological deposits were cleaned by hand to aid visual definition. Project Results: The archaeological monitoring and recording established that within the excavated areas, no archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were encountered other than those associated with the construction of the church. The church appears to have been built on a made ground of gravel, which overlies natural gravel layers deposited by alluvial processes.
