The name Scotland Farm dates from the 19th century. Prior to this the farm was called New Mills from which New Mills Heath derives its name. The first known reference to the name is in 1334 when Lennard de Neumulle was granted one messuage and 113 acres of land in Neumille, worth 3s 2d held of John Waleys as of his manor of Langton (Hutchins 1863, p538). A building is shown here in 1585 (Treswell) and in 1775 (Woodward) when it is called New Mills House shown next to the present barn. The buildings are described in detail in the vernacular buildings report held at Kingston Lacy Estate Office, Hillbutts. A date stone of 1665 on the farm house and the reuse of masonry from Corfe Castle indicate extensive rebuilding if not reconstruction of the house and barn in the late 17th century although it is clear that there has been a building near this site since the medieval period. Its position close to the Corfe River and its name imply that this was originally a watermill site and field boundaries, shown on the Treswell map, linking the buildings with the river indicate the alignment of the mill leet.
