Full Description
Limestone quarry at Corfe Castle Estate. (1) A dispersed area of limestone quarrying and extraction to the south of Eastington Farm. A large area of disturbed ground is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar of which this may be a part (2-4 and see MDO29258). The features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).

The remains of limestone quarries are visible near the bottom of the west slope of Abbascombe. These quarries are not recorded on the old maps but the field is called Long Close in 1775 (Woodward) and paving stone was being dug from Long Close in 1810. From July 28th – August 25th stone to Mr Nathaniel and James Chinchin 1078ft of paving transported by Mr Gillingham’s wagon team, from Thomas Corben’s quarry Long Close. The quarries cover an area of approximately 600 square metres they cut into the remains of medieval strip lynchets 112,075.
