Full Description

The HARTLEPOOL was torpedoed by German E boat. The bow was salvaged and a new stern fitted in 1941. (1)

The bow section was salvaged and a new stern fitted in 1941, leaving the old stern section and scattered wreckage on the seabed. The wreck was dispersed using explosive charges. (2)

22-NOV-1948 Wreck 4 fathoms 4 feet in 50 36 26N, 02 25 49W 19-JAN-1960 Least depth 28 feet in general depth 29 feet. Portions have been dispersed a considerable distance from the main part of wreck by heavy explosive charges used.

Fragments of the wreck are buried in the bottom and unless dispersal work below sea bed is carried out no better clearance can be expected. Position of main portion of wreck 50 36 27N, 02 25 47W.

18-MAY-1960 Main portion of wreck in 50 36 26N, 02 25 47W consists of tangled plates, etc., Approximately 40 feet x 10 feet in area. Least echo sounder depth 28 feet in general depth 32 feet. Scour [believed to be the demolition crater] is 5 feet deep. The smaller portion in 50 36 25N, 02 25 46W is a strong back, or similar girder, projecting 4feet above seabed. Least echo sounder depth 30 feet in general depth 34 feet. See other portion in 50 36 24N, 02 25 45W.

15-JAN-1982 Stand 2.5M high in general depth 17m. Ammunition in area.

03-OCT-1986 Least echo sounder depth 8.0 in general depth 9 - 9.5M. Scour 0.5M deep. Entangled fishing nets and ropes make identification and heightening difficult. Divers report wide area of debris at least 100 feet radius around central pit.

Diver confirmed no shape to wreck and identified 2 metal sheets, roughly 10 x 15 feet, lying flat but supporting jagged edges and girders

23-FEB-2009: Located in 5036.448N, 0225.867W [WGD] using DGPS. The least multibeam depth was 9.15m in a general depth of 9.8m. Scour 0.4m deep. Covers an area 80m by 80m. Height 1.1m. Strong magnetic anomaly. A number of features located within 40m of quoted position with an isolated object, 9.25m on top, at 5036.443N, 0225.835W. No contact lies at previous position. (6)7)

The vessel was finally lost off Yakeyama Saki, Aomori, on 17 January 1968. (5)
