Full Description

In 1982 S M Davies and P Aitken conducted an archaeological watching brief at the Sainsbury's site close to the NE corner of the Saxon burh in the centre of Christchurch. They observed an undated ditch running parallel to the mill stream which was observed to terminate close to the northern town defensive line. The ditch had a flat-bottomed profile and was 4m wide and 1m deep. The ditch was observed to be becoming shallower as it approached the area of site X12 <1>.

(SZ 15869289 sited from Authority 1 and OS 1:2500 1970) A ditch pre-dating the town defences has been recorded by S M Davies It runs parallel to the later defences on the east side and is similar in nature to the later ditch (SZ 19 SW 100) on the west side of town. <2>
