Description
In 1982 S. M. Davies and P. Aitken conducted an archaeological watching brief at the Sainsbury's site close to the NE corner of the Saxon burh in the centre of Christchurch.
They observed an undated ditch running paralle to the mill stream which was observed to terminate close to the northern town defensive line. The ditch had a flat-bottomed profile and was 4m wide and 1m deep. The ditch was observed to be becoming shallower as it approached the area of site X12 (1).
