Summary

One of two barrows at the parish boundary, possibly the 'Blackman Barrow' mentioned in Saxon charters. The site is visible as a partial cropmark ring ditch and mound on aerial photographs and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project.

Full Description

SY 768849962. Prob bowl barrow 13 paces diam, 2ft high. On Dewlish Boundary. Perhaps the Blackman Barrow of Anglo Saxon charters. <1>

A - SY 76839959 B - SY 76839963 Two bowl barrows partly under the plough and partly under grass. No ditches. 'B': Diam 17.0m and greatest height 1.0m. Rather badly shaped with many flints exposed. <3>

'B' - Barrow ? (76849962), in the NW angle of Whitelands Down (N) and adjoining the parish boundary with Cheselbourne, lies at over 400 ft OD on the ridge top; diam about 40ft ht 2ft. <5>

'B' - SY 76839962. Bowl barrow, diameter 18.0m., height 0.5m. Both barrows are ploughed down; neither has a visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <6>

The site of this barrow is visible as a partial cropmark ring ditch and mound on aerial photographs (8-9); it was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project.
