Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow on the south side of Warren Hill, Hengistbury Head. It is much reduced since excavated in 1919 by Harold St George Gray. No burials were found but the remains of a food vessel urn were found in the northeast part of the mound. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on undated aerial photographs (possibly 1960s).

Full Description

Ancient pottery fragments found, but not proved sepulchral in excavation (unpublished) by H St G Gray 1920. (Finds presumably in Taunton Museum). <2>

A very mutilated grass-covered mound. Diam 11.5m Ht 0.7m. <3>

A round barrow situated on the southern part of Warren Hill, Hengistbury Head. It was about 16.5 metres in diameter and about 0.6 metres high when excavated by St George Gray in 1919 (Mound E), but is now much reduced. No burials were located by the excavation, but the remains of a food vessel urn were recovered from the northeast part of the barrow. Some pottery described as ‘not Bronze Age’ was recovered from the northeast part of the barrow but this has not survived. Quantities of worked flint including six scrapers were recovered from the barrow. <5>

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on undated aerial photographs (possibly 1960s) <6>. The barrow is formed of a sub-circular mound measuring 7 m in diameter. The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. This site was digitally plotted during the South West rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
