Full Description
A post medieval building, at 2 Mill Lane, Wareham. Observations were made during building work here in January 1995. Paving slabs were removed from the floor and the exposed area was examined. The dark humic soil under the slabs was very disturbed with building material scattered throughout. A trial pit was dug and large quantities of broken brick and stone were observed a dispersed deposit of oyster shells was seen on a scatter of brick, the shell was collected. Much charcoal was seen in a service trench as well as more brick and mortar. A blocked out window was observed once wooden cladding was removed and an archway was revealed on the ground floor. The archway was part of a brick dividing wall and is believed to be a part of an 18th and 19th century refurbishment. The building was damaged in the 1762 Fire of Wareham, which may be the origin of the ash and charcoal seen under the paving and in the service trench. The lower parts of the building are of rubble dating to the 17th century and the upper parts are brick and date to the late 18th early 19th century the present open windows and doorways are of this later date. In the last century the building has seen use as a storehouse, warehouse, place of worship, Workmen's institute and practice hall for the Wareham Town Band. (1)
