Full Description
Evaluation at Howard's/Bonnet's Lane produced evidence for medieval deposits. Eight trenches were excavated and a number of pits, postholes and ditches were recorded. Finds included 12th to 14th century pottery. One N-S ditch contained numerous pieces of undressed limestone in a loose sandy mortar, possibly forming the remains of a wall foundation. Deposits were sealed by post-medieval layers. No medieval features were recorded on the Carion Lane or Moreton's Lane frontages (1 and 3)
An excavation trench was centred on the medieval deposits revealed in evaluation. 15 pieces of worked flint and two sherds of Roman pottery occurred residually in later contexts. Medieval features included: the rear of a rectangular post built structure revealed, represented by post holes, some containing limestone packing; small areas of burnt clay may represent a clay floor or demolition material from this structure; a further six postholes; a short section of N-S ditch (2.7m long x 0.7m wide x 0.29m deep) corresponding to the line of post holes associated with the structure; several rubbish pits. A post medieval garden soil sealed the medieval deposits and post-medieval features were limited to foundations and services associated with former bungalows (1 and 2)
