Description
Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological excavation of a site at Howard's Lane, Wareham during September 1994 in advance of residential development. The excavation followed on from an earlier evaluation in 1994 which had revealed evidence for 12th-14th century activity on the Howards Lane frontage. Eight trenches were excavated.
Features dating from the 12th to mid 13th century were revealed, possibly over more than one phase of activity. The features include a rectangular post-built structure running parallel to the present line of Howard's Lane. To the rear of the structure were a number of pits and a shallow ditch, possibly a plot boundary. The post built sturcture had an internal partition and a clay floor. The full dimensions of the building were not revealed. The building may be an outbuilding in the rear of a burgage plot that fronted on the North Street. [1]
