Find Spot record MDO8177 - Medieval pottery from 6 Roper's Lane, Wareham

Prior to the building of a house extension trenches to a depth of 1.8m were hand dug. No features were noted, but some large fragments of pottery were recovered. More medieval pottery was recovered in 2001 during observations during underpinning and the digging of foundation trenches for an extension.

Sherds of Roman, medieval, and post medieval pottery were found in trenches dug before the building of a house extension in 1993, no features were observed. The medieval pottery consisted of six sherds from handmade cooking pots dated to the 11th and 12th centuries, comparable with similar material recorded from Wareham to Corfe Castle. (1)(2)

Further observations were made during underpinning and digging of foundation trenches for an extension in 2001, and seven sherds recovered. These sherds were from hand-made cooking pots, typical of local coarse wares of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. (3)
