Description

Observations were made by Lilian Ladle during removal of soil for underpinning of foundations and digging of foundation trenches for an extension at 6 Ropers Lane in April 2001. A maximum depth of 2.6m was reached during underpinning, and the foundation trenches were 1m wide and 1m deep. A deep black soil was observed overlying yellow sand, presumed to be a natural deposit. It was not possible to enter the trenches, owing to concerns about safety, but the spoil was searched for finds. Medieval and post-medieval pottery, burnt flint, animal bone and amorphous metal scrap were recovered. Quantities of building material (Purbeck stone, brick, tile and slate) were observed.
