Summary

A sub-circular mound on the south side of Charlton Higher Down, Charminster, is visible as a soilmark and an earthwork on aerial photographs. The feature is considered to be a Bronze Age bowl barrow; it is shown as a tumulus on the OS 1st Edition map. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.

Full Description

Two bowl barrows `A' and `B'. 12 and 15 paces in diameter, 3 and 4.5ft high. 'B' has a ditch. <2>

`A'. A flinty mound, 11.0 metres in diameter and 1.2 metres high. A bowl barrow, with no visible ditch. <4>

`A'. SY 69449497. Bowl barrow, 36ft diameter, and 2.5ft high with disturbed centre, A low `Celtic' field lynchet runs up to the barrow on either side but is clearly later. <5>

`A' - SY 695950. Round barrow south-west of Wolfeton Clump. Scheduled. <6>

Bronze Age barrow visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. <7>

`A' has been ploughed down and now measures 13.5 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. Revised at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <8>

The feature is considered to be a Bronze Age bowl barrow; it is shown as a tumulus on the OS 1st Edition map [1]. An outer ditch is visble as a soilmark on 2020 Google Earth imagery [10]. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
