Full Description

(SY 91749805) Barrow approx base.<1>

This tumulus has been located and surveyed at SY 9177 9799. <2>

A. SY 9175 9813. A mound situated on top of a slight rise and planted with trees, 25.0m. Diameter, 1.3m. High, has been cut through the centre by a trench and a fence erected running north-east to south-west on the north-west side of the fence the mound is heavily overgrown and does not permit positive identification. There is no apparent sign of a ditch. A possible bowl barrow.<3>

The four features are correctly described in Auth 3. By the way in which the slopes of 'B' 'C' and 'D' merge into the surrounding slopes they are probably natural. 'A' is almost certainly the feature referred to in Auth. 1 though badly mutilated the abrupt junction of its slopes with the surrounding slopes makes the mound appear artificial. In view of the proximity of 'B' 'C' & 'D' however, 'A' too may be natural. One possible Bowl Barrow and three probable natural features. <4>

'A'. SY 9173 9811. A former single mound, probably a bowl barrow, has been trenched so that two elongated mounds remain on the north and south sides. The diameter was originally 24.0 metres. The height is 1.7 metres. No visible ditch. Not ploughed. 'A' and 'E' in woodland, the other probable barrows are in arable. 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'E' surveyed and 'D' resurveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <5>

A possible Bronze Age bowl barrow on Furze Hill, Morden, is visible as a sub-circular earthwork on current Environment Agency lidar imagery <6>. The feature is one of a row of three (adjacent to the east of MDO46548 and MDO46413) and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
