Summary

Bowl barrow set on a gentle north slope on Charlton Down. In 1970 the monument was recorded as being some 45 feet in diameter and four and a half feet high. The barrow has been disturbed by digging immediately below it on its north side. The barrow is visible as a slightly elliptical earthwork 14.5m by 12.5m on current Environment Agency lidar imagery, where there is also the suggestion of an outer ditch. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.

Full Description

SY 68949570. Probable barrow, 15 paces diameter and 4.5ft high dug into on the north side, situated on Charlton Higher Down. <1>

SY 68949570. Barrow? 45ft diameter and 4.5ft high, disturbed by digging immediately below it on the north side. <3>

A mound 11.8m. in diameter and 1.3m. high with no visible ditch. It has the appearance of a bowl barrow much mutilated on the NE side, with a shallow solution hollow on its northern edge. Revised at 1:2500 on MSD. <4>

The barrow is visible as a slightly elliptical earthwork 14.5m by 12.5m on current Environment Agency lidar imagery, where there is also the suggestion of an outer ditch (particularly on the multi hillshade visualisation) [1].
