Full Description
<1> Heaton M, 1996, Wareham Fishing Club, Holly Hedge Farm, Lytchett Minster, Dorset. Archaeological watching brief. (Unpublished document). SDO12548.
‘Excavation revealed a 0.30m thick surface mat of roots and incompletely decayed vegetable matter including fallen tree bolls. The surface mat sealed a deposit of homogeneous, fine silty wood peat, also containing large tree boll, which varied in thickness to a maximum of 2m with an undulating base. There was no apparent spatial or stratigraphic patter to the peat deposit. The peat rested on a thick deposit of very soft, homogenous, water-earing alluvial silt, predominantly bright yellowish brown in colour and up to 2m thick, which in turn appeared to rest on light grey Lias clays at about 19 mOD.
No archaeological structures or artefacts were revealed to indicate the time scale during which the above mentioned deposits had developed.’
