Full Description

Possible barrows adjoin the track from the Corfe-Wareham road to Scotland Farm on New Mills Heath. East of the track are two possible adjacent barrows at 'A'-SY 95768385 and 'B'-SY 95788384. <1>

'A'-(25a). SY 95768385. Bowl barrow, 8 paces diameter and 2ft high. <2>

The aerial photograph plot was not located when visited in 1985. <4>

‘Some unrecorded barrows in Purbeck. Mr. P. A. Brown has found several probable or possible barrows which are not recorded on the O.S. maps. … Corfe Castle, New Mills Heath, adjoining the track from the Corfe-Wareham road to Scotland farm ; in heathland, above the 50 ft. contour. East of the track, two adjacent possible barrows, SY(30)/95768385, and 95788384, and a probable barrow with traces of ditch, impinging on the track about 90 yds. S.S.W., 95718378. Another possible barrow, west of the track and on the north side of and old (? clay-)pit, 95638381.’

One of four possible burial mounds in the vicinity of the clay pit 112,363. It measures 10m dia. and 0.3m high and was identified in 1954. It is most probably the result of upcast from the clay pit as the O.S. 1” – 25” map shows a spread of quarry spoil across the site. Visited 28/10/1987.
