Summary

A bowl barrow reported in 1970 as having been destroyed. The mound of the barrow was said to have been about three feet high and around 72 feet in diameter. An estate map of 1777 shows this monument in 'Barrow Field'. The site is visible as a cropmark ring ditch on aerial photographs and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project. Traces of an internal mound are visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery.

Full Description

A bowl barrow on arable land. (No dimensions given). (2)

A grass covered bowl barrow, 23.0 metres diameter, 0.8 metres high, slightly spread on the downhill side. No trace of a ditch or excavation. (3)

SY 82539623. Bowl barrow, now destroyed, but formerly 72ft diameter and, 3ft high on lower north slope of ridge. (4)

This barrow has been destroyed. (5)

The site is visible as a cropmark ring ditch on aerial photographs (8) and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project. Traces of an internal mound are visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery (9).

‘The parish contains fifty barrows, on heathland to the S. and on downland, now largely arable, to the N. The heathland barrows are usually widely spaced; those on the downland are more numerous and often in clusters or groups. … The parish has an unusual number of named barrows; many, including some now destroyed and forgotten, e.g. Muddox barrow (about 862966), are shown on an estate map of 1777 by I. Taylor (in D.C.R.O). … … (89) Bowl (SY 89 NW; 82639623) in arable on lower N. slope of ridge above 200 ft. Diam. 72 ft., ht. 3 ft. In Barrow Field (1777). Destroyed.’
