Medieval settlement remains, comprising earthworks of closes, formerly part of Alton village. Banked linear features associated with areas of former medieval settlement are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Ceren and piddle Valleys AIM project.

Full Description

Settlement remains centred around ST 69950255, formerly part of Alton village, lie around Croker's Barton. They include some well-preserved closes bounded by low banks and scarps up to 2 feet high, and other more disturbed remains. <1-2>

Evidence of village shrinkage probably of post-Medieval date, comprising the site of two or three adjoining cottages at ST
69930265, similar to cottages still standing immediately to the north; with plots to the rear, now under pasture. Nothing of
interest south of Croker's Barton (old farm buildings). <3>

Banked linear features associated with areas of former medieval settlement are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery. The features form a series of small rectilinear closes and other more fragmented boundary remains. The features do extend south of Croker's Barton on lidar imagery. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and piddle Valleys AIM project. <5, 6>
