Full Description

The hoard of 366 coins was found in 1833 in a meadow at Sterte, near Poole. The second hoard was found in the same meadow. Further investigation located large fragments of as many as eight Romano-British vessels, but no further coins. It is possible that there was a habitation site of this period at Sterte. The coins and the urn in which they were found are in a good state of preservation and are in the possession of Mr Smith. <2>

A black Romano-British pot of native ware containing about 1000 coins was found by a labourer digging a pipe- trench in a meadow at Stert, on Holes Bay, Poole Harbour. The coins were third brass, from Valerianus to Claudius Gothicus, about 254-268. <3>

The whole of the 1930 coin hoard, together with the pots in which they were discovered, is on show in Poole Museum. The site of the find is now covered by the private garden of a factory. No information on the 1833 hoard. <5>
