Full Description

A hoard of 366 Roman third-brass coins from Gallienus (253-68) to Aurelian (273-5) was found at Poole before 1869. It is not known whether the find was kept together or distributed. <2>

The hoard of 366 coins was found in 1833 in a meadow at Sterte, near Poole. The second hoard was found in the same meadow. Further investigation located large fragments of as many as eight Romano-British vessels, but no further coins. It is possible that there was a habitation site of this period at Sterte. The coins and the urn in which they were found are in a good state of preservation and are in the possession of Mr Smith. <3>

A black Romano-British pot of native ware containing about 1000 coins was found by a labourer digging a pipe-trench in a meadow at Stert, on Holes Bay, Poole Harbour. The coins were third brass, from Valerianus to Claudius Gothicus, about 254-268. <4>

No information on the 1833 hoard. <6>
