Summary

A probable dam associated with the northern of the two ornamental lakes built in about 1750, and associated with Horton Tower as part of a planned landscape. A low linear bank 95m long is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery, it may be the dam and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

A low linear bank 95m long is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery, it may be the dam described in source 1 above. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP. (2)

'(14) Scarps and Banks (0307, 0406), in the broad valley of the brook which flows S.E. from the village, are all that survive of two ornamental lakes created c. 1750 and abandoned c. 1765. The S. lake alone is shown on O.S., 1811; the Tithe Map of 1841 shows the whole area as pasture. The remains comprise low sinuous scarps, the edges of the lakes, and two earthen dams up to 140 yds. long, 80 ft. wide and 12 ft. high (038069 and 044065).'
