Full Description

A lime kiln recorded as ‘old limekiln’ on the first edition (1886) (1) and second edition (1900-1902) Ordnance Survey maps. The date of this kiln is not known but it is most likely to be late nineteenth century. The site was visited in 1992-93 by Peter Stanier, who noted that most (60-79%) of the kiln survived in fair condition, and that the draw arch was built of stone and probably pointed.

The lime kiln and a small extractive pit to the southwest are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (2). The extractive pit is around 22m in length and is shown as 'Old Quarry' on the OS 1st Edition map (1). The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (3) and was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
