Summary

A series of linear scarps bordering a trackway to the southwest of Wantsley Farm, Broadwindsor, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s. A medieval strip lynchet around 220m in length was already recorded on the northeast facing slope and it is likely the additional lynchets are more of the same. A trackway shown on the OS 1st Edition map has alinear bank on its easst side, which may be another lynchet. The site was digitally recorded during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description

'(45) LYNCHET, on the N.E. slope of the hill 1 ¼m. E.S.E. of the parish church, forms a single terrace extending for about 220 yards.' (1)

A series of linear scarps bordering a trackway to the southwest of Wantsley Farm, Broadwindsor, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (2). A medieval strip lynchet around 220m in length was already recorded on the northeast facing slope (1) and it is likely the additional lynchets are more of the same. A trackway shown on the OS 1st Edition map (3) has a linear bank on its easst side, which may be another lynchet. The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (4). The site was digitally recorded during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
