Summary

An area of post medieval chalk extraction is visible as earthworks on the north side of Hambledon Hill on early aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery. It includes a chalk pit shown on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 25 inch map of c1880 and recorded separately as one of two chalk pits under MDO25707, also a lime kiln, recorded separately under MDO4055. The extent of excavation shown on a 1924 aerial photograph is wider than these two features and extends up onto the banks of Hambledon Hill hillfort and westwards towards another chalk pit recorded under MDO27506. The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.

An area of post medieval chalk extraction is visible as earthworks on the north side of Hambledon Hill on early aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (ALK 1924; CAP 1949; EA 2018). It includes a chalk pit shown on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 25 inch map of c1880 (OS c1880) and recorded separately as one of two chalk pits under MDO25707, also a lime kiln, recorded separately under MDO4055. The extent of excavation shown on a 1924 aerial photograph is wider than these two features and extends up onto the banks of Hambledon Hill hillfort and westwards towards another chalk pit recorded under MDO27506. The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.

The lime kiln is extant in 1924, ruined by 1949. The chalk pits remain visible on current lidar imagery.
