Full Description

A rectilinear banked enclosure to the northwest of Charlton Higher Down, Charminster, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs [1]. The feature comprises a broken arrangement of narrow linear bank sections forming a rectilinear enclosure approcimately 55m by 30m with a slightly curved northern end and a larger break at its southwest corner. An additonal linear bank and a linear ditch are visible in the interior of the feature. Wider linear banks are visible on current lidar imagery, some of which might conform with the enclosure or alternatively part of a wider later prehistoric field system. [1, 2]

The enclosure could potentially be later prehistoric in origin, perhaps of Iron Age to Roman date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
