Summary

A small unanotated hollow is marked on the OS 2nd edition map on Burleston Down, Burleston. It is shown as a larger pit which is marked as a chalk pit on the 5th edition map. The hollow is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery along with a second to the north and a third hollow to the south east. They were digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM Project and were considered likely to be the sites of 19th or early 20th century extractive pits.

Full Description

A small unanotated hollow is marked on the OS 2nd edition map on Burleston Down, Burleston <1>. It is shown as a larger pit which is marked as a chalk pit on the 5th edition map <2>. The hollow is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery along with a second to the north and a third hollow to the south east <3>. They were digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM Project and were considered likely to be the sites of 19th or early 20th century extractive pits.
