Full Description

Linear banked and ditched features on Weam Common Hill, Cerne Abbas, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. The features are narrow and regular in character and form a rectilinear pattern. It is not clear from the aerial sources whether they underlie or overlie a partial rectilinear enclosure (MDO48412) of uncertain date, but potentially of Iron Age/Roman origin. At their southern end they meet with later prehistoric field boundaries forming part of a probable Iron Age/Roman field system (MDO48409). A possible later prehistoric settlement site (MDO722) is also recorded att his location. The form of the features suggests field boundaries of possible post medieval origin but they could potentially be of earlier, later prehistoric, date. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
