Summary

A D-shaped enclosure on Rowden Hill, Cerne Abbas, is visible as a soilmark on 1969 aerial photographs. The feature is located within part of a later prehistoric field system (MDO734) and might be contemporary, potentially of Iron Age/Roman date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.

Full Description

A D-shaped enclosure on Rowden Hill, Cerne Abbas, is visible as a soilmark on 1969 aerial photographs [1]. The features comprises a 50m by 43m banked D-shaped enclosure, the bank being approximately 5m wide. No obvious entrance is identifiable, the southeast corner is slightly truncated by a modern field boundary line. A 15m in diameter sub-circular banked earthwork is visible on the west side of the enclosure. The bank of this aapproximately 5m wide and there is a slight suggestion of an entrance into this on the SE side. The feature is located within part of a later prehistoric field system (MDO734) and might be contemporary, potentially of Iron Age/Roman date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project. The feature is not visible on current Environment Agency lidar imagery.
