Summary

Several parallel and closely set regular and narrow banked lynchets in fields to the southeast of Cerne Abbas are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The features might possibly be strip lynchets, possibly part of a medieval strip field system, they align with other strip fields to the west and northwest. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.

Full Description

Several parallel and closely set regular and narrow banked lynchets in fields to the southeast of Cerne Abbas are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The features might possibly be strip lynchets, part of a medieval strip field system - they align with other more obvious areas of medieval strip field adjacent to the west and northwest. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project. Only one or two remain visible on current lidar imagery.
