Full Description
Banked linear and curvilinear features to the north of Alton Pancras are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2, 3]. The features are considered to possibly be earthworks associated with an area of deserted medieval settlement, possibly Barcombe medieval settlement, as recorded under MDO70. There are additional regular straight linear banked features to the north of the settlement remains, that might be field boundaries, perhaps associated with an area of medieval strip field. The main core of the deserted settlement appears to be south of the road, recorded under MDO48368. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM project.
