Full Description
Banked and ditched rectilinear features in a field to the east of Up Cerne Manor House, Up Cerne, are visible as earthworks on a 1925 aerial photograph [1]. The features form parallel rectilinear enclosures on a SSE to NNW alignment. They are considered to be field boundaries of potentially medieval origin, possibly even another area of shrunken medieval settlement at Up Cerne, similar to other areas to the northwest (MDO2816). A ditched feature with flanking banks at the southwest end might be part of a hollow way - it potentially continues as an extant field boundary shown on the OS 1st Edition map, although no trackway is indicated here [2]. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM project.
Some of the features remain visible on current Environment Agency lidar imagery [3].
