Monument record MDO48158 - Possible medieval field boundaries, Up Cerne

Please read our .

Summary

Banked rectilinear features in a field to the east of Up Cerne are visible as earthworks on 1945 aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery. The features are within part of probable former medieval open field around Up Cerne, running counter to the direction of adjacent medieval lynchets to the south (MDO2815). One of the linear features extends below a field boundary extant in 1945 and abuts the northernmost lynchet. The features are considered to possibly be field boundaries of medieval date but an earlier origin is also possible. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM project.
