Full Description

A concentration of five sub circular hollow features in fields to the south of Holcombe Wood, Cerne Abbas, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. Four of the features are recorded on the OS 1st Edition map as old chalk pits [3]. The fifth might also be a post medieval chalk pit, although a series of gravel pits are also recorded to the south (MDO48131), and it might alternatively be the same. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM project.
