Summary

The cemetery chapel was designed in 1927 by W L Clowes, it did not contain a crematory at this time but was designed with an underground chamber that would in the future contain one. A Gothic style building with a prominent apse and substantial tower, work to install the crematory was begun in 1937 and the crematorium opened in 1938. The crematorium is surrounded by a Garden of Memory. The crematorium was extended in 1959, a wing containing a Chapel of Memory, a waiting room, refreshment room, kitchen, staff room and toilets was added to the west. With a second phase of building adding a new West Chapel, vestry, organ chamber and and an underground committal room. New chimneys, flues and furnaces were added in 1973 and the Garden of Rest was extended.
