Summary

Archaeological evaluation by AC archaeology in 2017 revealed a buried soil of medieval or earlier origin. Sherds of pottery within this soil mostly hard-fired sandy fabrics, some with flint and grog inclusions. Most were plain but two were splashed with a green glaze and were of Hermitage or West Dorset type dating from the 13th century and later. Some rim sherds were present including plain flat-topped and one pie-crust decorated rim from a ceramic bottle-like vessel. These dated between the 12th and 14th century. The post-medieval pottery was mostly found in the pits in two trenches and dated between the 17th to late 19th century. Sherds included some from south Somerset, probably the Donyatt kilns and also Verwood and Holnest wares. The forms included domestic bowls, jars, jugs and one bung hole from a pitcher.
