Description
An archaeological evaluation consisting of three trenches, each measuring 15m by 1.8m excavated by machine to the depth of the natural subsoil. Each trench revealed an extensive soil horizon of medieval or earlier origin underlying a deep layer (0.8m) of probable garden soils of post-medieval and modern date. Several soil-cut features were found in two trenches, probably post-medieval refuse dumping sites. Several sondages dug by hand through the medieval horizon revealed no archaeological features or artefacts. A small assemblage of finds from the probable refuse pits included medieval and post-medieval pottery and animal bone. In all three trenches the buried soil horizon contained medieval pottery sherds.
