Full Description
Two parallel ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1971 (2) and were digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project. They may be the line of an undated trackway running for 175m in a southwesterly direction.
<1> Richards, J, 1992, Watching brief and excavation at Milborne St Andrew, Dorset, L3 (Unpublished document). SDO12395.
‘Three linear features were recorded (Fig. 2, L1-3). … L3 is 15m south of L2 and visible for a total length of 250m. This feature comprises two parallel elements, the southernmost being the strongest, and probably representing a ditch. The slighter mark, c. 5m to the north, may prove to be a palisade trench, a feature which can be paralleled on the Quarley linear complex in Hampshire.
There are extensive traces of “open” settlement-like features between L2 and L3 (Fig. 2, “S”).’
<2> J R Boyden, 07-FEB-1971, JRB 371/4596 (Aerial Photograph). SDO20760.
