Summary

A ring ditch recorded from aerial photographs. One of a cluster of ring-ditches and interpreted as the probable remains of a Bronze Age round barrow cemetery. The site was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project.

Full Description

The possible site of a plough-levelled Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a partial cropmark ring ditch 11m across on aerial photographs taken in 1971 (2). The site was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project.

‘Ten ring ditches were noted (Fig. 2, R1-R10). … Group R2-R8, with an outlier at R9, is in all probability a previously unrecorded barrow cemetery located on the northern end of the low hill to the south of the modern village. This group, taken in conjunction with the previously-recorded barrows and ring ditches (RCHME 1970), strongly suggests Bronze Age activity in the immediate vicinity of the transcript area.’
