Full Description

Bournemouth Archaeology conducted a watching brief on development taking place at the former Power Station in Poole in August of 2011. The site encompasses Rigler Road and the New Link Road and three areas of activity were represented on the site, all dating to the Roman Period.
Activity Phase 1 featured a ditch with dimentions of 7m by 1.70m and a depth of 0.33m. From the fill of this ditch 14 sherds of late Iron-Age to 3rd century AD pottery were recovered along with a single fragment of tile, suspected to be from a Roman house, and a piece of copper wire closer to the base. An oval post hole was identified at the base of this ditch measuring 0.53m by 0.30m and was either truncated by the ditch or added on contemporarily.
Activity Phase 2 featured a curvilinear ditch measuring 10m by 1.60m and 0.29m deep. Three sherds of 2nd to 3rd century AD pottery were recovered from this fill. This feature had been disturbed frequently by modern foundations associated with the Blandford Road properties.
Phase 3 activity site featured two almost parallel linear features. The dimentions of the first [20] measure 4m by 0.65m and 0.20m at depth, Linear 2 [26] was 1.7m by 0.60m and 0.13m deep. A single fragment of briquetage or daub and a struck flint being recovered from the fill of feature [20].
Features were also identified without being able to associate a phase of activity. The features include a linear and a ditch measuring 13.5m by 1.50m and 0.61 at depth. From the ditch a total of five sherds of late 2nd to early 3rd century AD pottery were recovered as well as a single fragment of briquetage. Additionally two pits were uncovered. The first measured 0.66m by 0.60m, had a depth of 0.15m and contained a single fragment of struck flint. The second pit was more substantial with dimentions of 4.90m by 3.05m with a depth of 1.47m. A fragemnt of struck flint was recovered along with three sherds of 2nd to 3rd century AD pottery. Three sherds of New Forest Ware pottery were also recorded from this cut dating to 250-370 AD and an additional 12 sherds were recovered dating to 260-370 AD and included New Forset Ware and black burnished ware
