Summary

Historic banked and ditched field boundaries to the northeast of Brimley Farm, Stoke Abbott, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1970s. The banks and ditches may represent the remains of a late prehistoric field system, although a later origin is also possible. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description

ST447004. Rectangular features SE and NE of Brimbury Farm cover circa 6 acres in a N-S combe and may be the remains of Celtic fields or susequent closes-banks. <1>

Historic banked and ditched field boundaries to the northeast of Brimley Farm, Stoke Abbott, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s <2> and 1970s <3>. The banks and ditches may represent the remains of a possible late prehistoric field system, although a later origin is also possible. The ditched linears are broadly parallel and closely spaced. Those on the south side of the road may partly lie within a retaining bank. The site remains partially visible on the latest Google Earth imagery <4>. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
