Summary

A formerly extensive area of earthworks on the west side of Chantry Fields, Gillingham, has been shown by a number of excavations to represent a medieval suburb or settlement associated with Gillingham. The earthworks have now largely been built over by housing, the Gillingham by-pass and Waitrose Supermarket car park.

Full Description

The earthworks at Chantry Farm Gillingham were surveyed by the RCHME in October 1990, subsequent to the excavation by Wessex Archaeology of test pits along the line of a proposed road across the site.

The earthworks appear to represent the remains of several raised building platforms of medieval date lying to the NE of the surveyed area. These are defined and interconnected by a loosely gridded pattern of ditches and holloways, which may have served both to provide access to and drainage from the structures, reminiscent of the layout of many clayland villages in the midlands.
