Full Description

The site of a post medieval extractive pit or possible millpond to the southeast of Sandpit Flax Mill, Burstock, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and on the latest Lidar imagery (2). An oval depression around 86m long is visible on an aerial photograph of 1947 (1) to the south of the mill pond, which is shown on the OS 1st Edition map (3). The depression may represent the sandpit after which the mill (NMR ST 40 SW 39; Hob UID 1305053) was named, or alternatively this may have been a second millpond, or re-used as such, as it lies adjacent to the sluices and mill race. A banked linear across the centre of the depression present in 1947 (1) is still in use as a modern path or trackway (4). The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (4). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
