Full Description

A series of banked strip lynchets to the northeast of Park Water Cottages are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). The long linear banks run closely parallel along a gentle north facing slope, slightly across the contours, and are potentially medieval in origin.

An Historic England Monument Record of the site (NMR ST40SW33; Hob UID 883379) documents 'slight earthworks of strip lynchets present on the west boundary of Burstock Parish. One of the earthworks is well-preserved and extends for a distance of 220 yards'.

An aerial photograph of 1947 (1) suggests that the strip lynchets may continue west beyond the parish boundary into Broadwindsor Parish and north under a historic field boundary shown on the OS 1st Edition historic mapping (2). Some of the banks are now under residential development, others are still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (3). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
