Summary

A medieval strip field system is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery surrounding Sloes Hill. Up to three lynchets are visible on the north side along with a small area of associated ridge and furrow. Further lynchets lie on the other sides of the hill, those to the southwest and east being fossilised in modern field boundaries. The system was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description

SY 448 934. Sloes Hill. Two contour lynchets exceed ten feet at the centre. The lower has open ends, is about 200 yards long, and the upper follows the contour round the hill to the West side and exceeds 400 yards in length. <1>

A medieval strip field system is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery surrounding Sloes Hill <2-3>. Up to three lynchets are visible on the north side along with a small area of associated ridge and furrow. Further lynchets lie on the other sides of the hill, those to the southwest and east being fossilised in modern field boundaries. Overall, the system covers an area of 8 hectares, it was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
