Monument record MDO38338 - Medieval strip lynchets, Quarry Hill, Chideock

The remains of a medieval strip field system are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery on the eastern side of Quarry Hill. The lynchets part of a wider system of lynchets that surround the hill and are described in records MDO901, MDO38337 and 9. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

SY 436 933. At the East end of Quarry Hill there are sinuous risers, from 4-10 feet in height. These may have begun as strip lynchets, but are perhaps old hedge lines. <1>

The remains of a medieval strip field system are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery <2-3> on the eastern side of Quarry Hill. Fragments of five lynchets are visible, they have been partially fossilized in the modern field boundaries. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP, they form part of a wider system of lynchets that surround the hill and are described in records MDO901, MDO38337 and 9.
