Summary

Cropmark and soilmarks of a large double-ditched sub-circular later prehistoric enclosure, possiby Iron Age, visible on aerial photographs taken in April 2015 as part of the Historic England Reconnaissance Recording Programme. The enclosure with an associated trackway and field boundaries was digitally recorded from aerial photographs taken in 1976 during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project.

Full Description

Cropmark and soilmarks of a large double-ditched sub-circular later prehistoric enclosure, possiby Iron Age, visile on aerial photographs taken in April 2015 as part of the Historic England Reconnaissance Recording Programme. Located at SY 8210 9947 the enclosure measures between 180m and 200m across. It straddles two fields, the northern part is not visible due to darker soil tones. The enclosure is defined by two irregular widely spaced circuits of ditch. <1-3>

The enclosure was digitally recorded from aerial photographs taken in 1976 <5> during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project. The inner enclosure is 100m across, and the outer is over 160m across east west. An inturned entrance is located on the southeast side which opens onto a bank and ditched trackway system with associated field boundaries. These features are all likely to be contemporay with the field system described in MDO5339.
