Summary

A ditch recorded in the course of an archaeological evaluation in 2000 in connection with proposed housing development. This feature lay beneath earthworks of a post-medieval ditched hedgebank, and was interpreted by the excavators as indicating an earlier, possibly medieval, field system.

‘6 CONCLUSIONS … The evaluation has also shown that there are a number of surviving archaeological features which are not visible on the surface and which do not relate to the earthworks. The ditch in Trench 3 suggests that there may be traces of an earlier, possibly medieval, field system surviving beneath the present arrangement. This is of local significance as almost no traces of medieval field sysstems survive in Puddletown parish (RCHME 1970; Hearne and Birbeck 1999).’
